A home for veterans at risk of homelessness in Pontypridd has completed the first stage of a major renovation, with the second phase due to finish by the end of the year.
Alabaré – the largest housing provider for veterans in Wales – received almost £500,000 from the Government's Veterans' Capital Housing Fund towards the project. The first phase converted the garage and roof space into self-contained flats, designed for veterans taking steps towards independent living while still having on-site support available if they need it.
When the refurb is complete, the number of bed spaces at the Pontypridd home will have increased by 83 per cent. Work continuing this summer includes a two-storey extension, a new communal dining area, kitchen refurbishments, and a sensory and wellbeing room for veterans with PTSD and poor mental health.
The funding came from a £4.5 million pot distributed by the Office for Veterans' Affairs across 19 UK organisations working to reduce homelessness among former military personnel.
